April 18 Bout Recap

"The Assassination City Roller Derby staged a furious rally late in the second half, and took an exciting 126-114 victory in overtime against the Alamo City Rollergirls in Mesquite, Texas on Saturday.

Speedyrella would open up the bout with a 4-2 jam to put the Alamo City Las Tejanas on the board. Brandi Danger of the home team would strike back for nine-points in the second jam to give the Special Ops an 11-4 lead. An 8-0 jam by Las Tejanas' Barbara Coa in the forth jam would give the team from San Antonio an 18-16 lead. That would be the first of six consecutive jams where Alamo City would shut out the team in pink camouflage jerseys, and work the lead up to 30-16 after nine jams.

Barbara Coa would strike with a 9-0 jam in the 13th jam of the first half to give Las Tejanas a 48-22 lead. Speedyrella would add a 9-0 jam in the 17th jam for Alamo City, and Las Tejanas would score a 4-3 advantage by Shay Manyu in the last jam of the half to take what appeared to be a dominant 65-34 lead at the halftime.

If any of the fans in Mesquite were in doubt after that period, momentum could change, all they needed to realize was the jammer refs would change and cover different teams' jammers in the second half. Sometime early in the half, Alamo City would see of foreshadowing of bad breaks to come. Their jammer would break out of the pack with what appeared to be lead jammer status and gain a strong advantage in attacking the pack for points. Then the Assassination City jammer would break out of the pack, and also be given lead jammer status, but called off the jam just before the visiting team's jammer could get into the pack. The jam was a 0-0 jam, but an opportunity lost for points for Alamo City in what turned out to be an extremely close bout.

After a scoreless first jam of the second half, Olive Illegal scored nine points for the Special Ops, but seven points for Assassination City did not make it up onto the scoreboard until the third jam of the half was being skated. It could be that the points were credited to Barbara Coa, or it could be that they were split between the first and second jams. Whatever, the Alamo City lead had been narrowed to 72-43.

Las Tejanas would hit 100 points in the 11the jam of the half, and somehow the 28-point lead looked very formidable at that point. But the home team defense would limit Alamo City to 14 points for the rest of the bout.

Miley Virus would score a 9-0 jam in the 15th jam to narrow the lead down to 106-87. Alamo City would start the 16th jam with three players in the penalty box, and Brandi Danger would add an 8-0 jam for the Special Ops to further narrow the lead to 106-95. Miley Virus would chip away for a 1-0 18th jam, as Las Tejanas' Tonya Hurting followed her quickly into the pack. Barbara Coa would stop the Alamo City point hemorrhaging with a 4-0 jam in the 19th jam giving Las Tejanas a 110-96 lead.

Then one of the key jams of the night would occur in the bout. As the fans cheered loudly, the situation on the track and in the penalty box seemed to get more and more confusing. In the 20th jam, Speedyrella would gain lead jammer status, but would be sent to the penalty box with a major penalty. Mona Bruiser would follow her out of the pack but would also be sent to the penalty box with a major penalty causing a jammerless jam. The Alamo City Rollergirls would have three skaters in the penalty box and only two to choose from on the track to become the jammer for the next jam. They would choose one of the league's top blockers, but only an occasional jammer Shay Manyu to jam in the 21st jam. Assassination City would be able to get the speedy Miley Virus on the jammer line.

Early on, Miley Virus got lead jammer for the home team, and soon after the Alamo City jammer was sent to the penalty box. The speed skater from Dallas would take advantage of the situation and score a 9-0 jam to narrow the lead to 110-105. The fans at Dad's Broadway Skateland were going wild with anticipation as Mona Bruiser took the line for Assassination City for what appeared to be the last jam of the bout, and the Las Tejanas' jammer would start the jam in the box.

Mona Bruiser would pick up a full pack pass for five points, and then pick up another pass for four points. But in the meantime, Shay Manyu had gotten out of the penalty box, made an initial pass, an then also made a pack pass of her own to pick up four crucial points for Alamo City. That would put the game into overtime at a 114-114 score.

As the refs and coaches and captains from each team huddled at the scorers table, there was a lot of confusion. But the lineup caller for Alamo City Harmin Elektra came out of the huddle with her clipboard raised high and started calling the Alamo City skaters over to get a lineup together for the overtime period.

Alamo City would put Speedyrella on the jammer line, and Assassination City would counter with Miley Virus—two speed skating jammers that would decide the game. But early on in the two-minute super jam, where no one can gain lead jammer status, Speedyrella was sent to the penalty box with a major penalty, presumably a cutting the track major. And Miley Virus was left out there on her own to pick up points. While the Las Tejanas blockers played tough under a difficult situation, Miley Virus would pick up a grand slam. But eventually Speedyrella would serve her one-minute penalty, and be back on the track to pick up points and try to keep her team in the super jam.

It was not to happen as she was soon sent to the penalty box with another major, and Miley Virus was able to add another seven points to her original grand slam. That made the final score put up on the scoreboard 126-114 and the home fans had seen an amazing comeback for a hugely entertaining victory.

The leading scorer for Assassination City was Miley Virus with 46 points. Olive Illegal chipped in with 39 points, whiled Brandi Danger scored 22 points, and Mona Bruiser added 18 points, all in the second half. Mona Bruiser was also the leading blocker for the Special Ops. Other top blockers included Sloan Gunman, Trigger Mortis, Calypso Crash, and Mary Ate Ashley.

Top scorer for the bout and Alamo City was Barbara Coa with 49 points. Other leading scorers were Speedyrella with 34 points, and Tonya Hurting with 19 points. Shay Manyu added eight key points for Las Tejanas. All individual scoring is unofficial. Top blockers for the team from San Antonio included Pleasure 2 Beat Ya, Virgo Vengeful, Karmic Recall, and Crash N Burnadette..."
